Golf Course Superintendent
Golf Course in Rembert, South Carolina is looking for a Golf Course Superintendent.

Position Overview:
Be entrusted with establishing an elite, world-class maintenance program from scratch during the construction period and with maintaining the golf course once grassed through Opening Day and beyond. Ownership and member expectations will be high for the conditioning of the golf course. The style of the golf course will be rugged and classical, with fairways bleeding into sandy native areas with no maintained rough.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities:
• Design and oversee the buildout of the maintenance facilities. By March 1, we expect to have roughly 10,000 square feet of indoor space for the maintenance area, including office spaces, restrooms, shower, and a breakroom. The Golf Course Superintendent will lead the design of the rest of the interior upfit within budgetary limits (i.e., mechanic area, storage, etc.) and monitor the General Contractor’s work. The Golf Course Superintendent will also design the exterior upfit within budgetary limits (i.e., fuel station, storage bins, etc.) and monitor the appropriate installation contractors.
• Advise Owner on key decision points during construction (i.e., grassing selection, washout areas, etc.)
• Recruit, interview, and hire maintenance staff, both full-time and part-time employees.
• Plan, organize, and direct the grow-in of the golf course. The full fleet of grow-in equipment has already been ordered through John Deere.
• After Opening Day, plan, organize, and direct the entire maintenance program for greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, native areas/grasses, and sandscapes.
• Supervise the efficient operation of an equipment service and repair shop.
• Conduct daily inspections of the golf course and related areas to evaluate how well management standards are being achieved and to effect changes in maintenance programs.
• Manage inventory and maintain all owned and leased equipment.
• Establish detailed, day-to-day operational and scheduling protocols to ensure maximum efficiency among maintenance personnel and equipment.
• In addition to the golf course itself, manage and maintain the clubhouse grounds, driving range, maintenance facility grounds, and unused acreage/peripheral areas as identified by the Owner.
• Establish a thorough training and onboarding program for new maintenance employees.
• Procure equipment, supplies, and materials within budgetary limitations.
• Maintain records of annual maintenance activities and costs.
• Prepare and present the annual golf course maintenance budget.
• Maintain regular communication with Owner and other key management personnel to discuss activities, goals, plans and member input.
• Develop a long-term plan that outlines major future projects.
• Regularly assess cost control measures to keep, as nearly as possible, operating expenses in line with approved budgets, and promptly communicate budget variances with the Owner.
• Keep accurate and complete records on inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures, pesticide applications, etc.
• Develop a healthy in-house career path to recruit and retain highly successful employees, making this course a destination for top turf interns and recruits throughout the region and beyond.

Requirements:
A 2 or 4 year degree/certificate in turfgrass management or agronomy.
Licensed pesticide applicator.
Experience in all phases of golf course management and turf culture.
Expert knowledge of the construction, establishment, and maintenance practices employed throughout a golf property, to include all playing surfaces, peripheral features, and infrastructure.
Significant knowledge and first-hand experience with the game of golf.
Knowledge of golf course architecture and basic design principles.
Experience with Bermuda turfgrass is preferred.
Experience maintaining exposed sandscapes and native areas is preferred.
Experience proliferating and maintaining grasses native to the Carolina Sandhills is a plus.
Ability to lead and create a healthy working culture where people feel that they are growing, learning, appreciated, heard, and can advance within the organization. The key to retaining talent is happy people that are treated well and paid well.
Ability to roll with the uncertainties that come with a brand new “startup” golf club, taking everything in stride with integrity and good humor. That means a fast-paced environment, changing priorities, and juggling multiple tasks every day.
Being a team player, rolling up your sleeves, occasionally getting dirty, and doing what needs to be done.
Having an open-mindedness toward doing things differently on a non-traditional golf course.
Fostering a culture where people pay attention to the details, think on their feet, and feel empowered to come forward with ideas of their own.
Building a rapport with members and guests.
Certain physical demands commonly associated with a Golf Course Superintendent are required to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disability to perform the essential functions.

Compensation:
$155,000 per year.
