Golf Course Superintendent
Golf Club in Avon, Connecticut is looking for a Golf Course Superintendent.

Position Overview:
The ideal candidate will have a genuine passion for agronomic practices, experience as the superintendent or the number one assistant at a prestigious private facility and have been responsible for greens with a mixture of poa and bent grasses. The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for the maintenance and agronomic practices of the golf course as well as club grounds, a staff of 27 employees in season, management of a $1.66m operating budget and the oversight of all golf course equipment/capital projects. The candidate must be a well-rounded business professional, a strong team player who works exceptionally well with staff and other members of management and possess at least an associates degree in agronomy/turf management. The Superintendent will report to the COO, with a dotted line to the Golf Committee Chair.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Control and direct the maintenance, care, and improvement of the golf course, including maintenance facility, irrigation system, and all golf course and grounds machinery.
2. Implement policies established by the Club through its governing structure, including the Board of Governors and Golf Committee.
3. Interview, hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate all personnel assigned to department in accordance with applicable state and federal laws, and policies of the Club.
4. Supervises all planting, fertilizing and care of turf, plants, shrubs, trees and other facilities on the golf course.
5. Records all maintenance on course and maintains historical log for future review.
6. Prepares annual operating and capital budgets for the department for approval of the Chief Operating Officer, Golf Committee, Finance and Budget Committee and Board of Governors; takes corrective action as necessary to help assure that budget goals are met.
7. Recommend and supervise the purchase, lease, installation, and maintenance of golf course equipment and improvements including, but not limited to, cart paths, tee markers, waste receptacles, flags, signs, toilets, water stations, shelters and the like.
8. Selects and prepares proper fertilizers and nutrients for all flora and fauna.
9. Apply, inventory, and maintain all pesticides, petroleum and other controlled products in accordance with applicable laws and regulations (federal, state and local), and prudent management practices. Maintains required records and strives to minimize the use of chemicals and petroleum products.
10. Develops and maintains drainage, irrigation and watering systems.
11. Maintains course in proper playing condition.
12. Implements and enforces comprehensive safety program for employees, members and guests on course in compliance with local, state and federal laws.
13. Maintains accurate work records for all personnel in the department.
14. Communicates as necessary with golf and tennis professionals to discuss conditions of facilities, maintenance plans and scheduled events.
15. Communicates as necessary with Golf and/or other applicable committees.
16. Communicates as necessary with Club membership regarding course conditions, maintenance practices and other items as needed
17. Attends staff, management, and Golf Committee meetings.
18. Insures that all staff applying chemicals have the proper training, certification and licenses in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.
19. Attends turf conferences, equipment shows, workshops and other educational programs to maintain a current knowledge of technical and turf innovations and changes that could affect the department’s operations.
20. Develop, implement, and review on an annual basis, policies and procedures (The Ground Manual) affecting the orderly maintenance of the golf course and the equipment.
21. Prepares with the Chief Operating Officer and the Golf Committee a long-range plan for improvements to the golf course and projections for financial and membership needs, and coordinate the implementation of the plan.
22. Oversees all course construction and renovation projects.
23. Conducts daily facility security checks ensuring accurate inventory of equipment and keys.
24. Coordinates and supervises snow removal for all facilities associated with the Club.
25. Plans professional development and training activities for subordinates.
26. Coordinates tournaments and related activities with the Head Golf Professional and Clubhouse Manager.
27. Coordinate with the Chief Operating Officer the hiring of any independent contractor retained by the Club related to the operations of the golf course.
28. Maintain the golf course, including fairways, roughs, greens, tees and grounds, in proper playing conditions and in a manner consistent with the budget provided and standards set by the Club.
29. Perform such duties as are customarily performed by a private golf club superintendent as assigned by the Club.

Requirements:
Requires advanced knowledge of agronomy and turf grass management practices; a working knowledge of golf facility construction principles, practices and methods; and a thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of golf.
Requires a high degree of administrative and executive ability, especially in terms of problem-solving and decision making
Requires excellent oral and written communication skills
Requires knowledge of current federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting the management of the golf course operations (including, but not limited to, employment, safety and environmental standards, laws and regulations)
Requires participation in continuing education opportunities such as seminars, workshops, correspondence courses, field days and trade shows
May require current state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator.

Compensation:
$125,000 – $175,000 per year.
